The History of Oddball
I’m in New Berlin doing a mission and surrounded by angry Hessians (as usual), when an incoming transmission splashes across the screen blocking out half my view (as usual).
“Hey, u in a clan?”
“no”
“Want to join one?”
“no”
“It’s really great, growing fast”
“no”
“we don’t own any systems but we are getting one soon”
“no”
“Ever been in a clan?”
“yes”
“Hey, who was that?”
“doesn’t matter”
“This one is better, We’ll make u a leader”
“why?”
“Because u r awesome”
“How u figure that?”
“u got a really high rank”
“it’s only money”
“go to NY and start a new ship, put our tag on it”
“no”
“why not?”
“why?”
“u suck man”
“pfft”
The last Hessian finally dies in a ball of fire and molten metal. I sift through the debris for any nobium, beam it up and head for home. Docking at The Ring I dispose of the spoils of battle and head out to NB for a new mission. I noticed on the board that the guy who reckoned I sucked had done a runner to somewhere else. They rarely hung around.
That last conversation has got me wondering thou. Missions are getting a bit boring I must admit. Just on this character alone I have racked up some 270 missions and killed over 7000 ai. I managed to make enough credits to reach level 71. My trade ship is even level 60. I even go hunting Hessians in the Drom just to break the monotony. Damn, I need to get a life – lol.
I remember my time in Clans. What a bloody miserable mistake that was. First there was M4H.
“Hey, sign up and be in the best clan on GOI” they said. Pffft. I signed up, right into the middle of a clan war between them and G3NOCIDE. All I could manage to do was die a lot of the time. Believe it or not, it was actually left mainly up to my son and I to take the fight to G3N on our own, usually it was 4 or 5 of them to the 2 of us. No training, no money, no backup, no nothing. Any one of them had us on toast. Then to top it all off, we were accused of cheating by G3N and bloody M4H believed them, not us, and even after we proved our innocence they still gave us a hard time. We resigned. M4H folded not long after that. Good thing too. My son gave up playing FL because of it.
Next came the Dangerous Outlaw Gang, commonly referred to as DOGs. Another huge waste of time, money and energy. At first I thought I’d really get right into this one. I did all the trade runs for them. I even defended their actions on forums even thou I had not taken any part in their stupid raids. They up and changed sides, which was ok I suppose, but they didn’t ask any of the members. So, still without training, ships or credits, I tried to fit in. I duelled Master_DOG twice, only the second and third time I had a 1 on 1 pvp and did him easy both times. I thought something was wrong here. A little time later the DOGs just up and vanished, gone without so much as a cya. Pffft!
I was just thinking “Nah, clans are for mugs.” when yet another message splashed across my screen. I’m docked on NB now so it’s not as much of a nuisance as the last one.
“Hey, u in a clan?”
Oh, crap, seems this is the only conversation I ever have.
“no” I replied, as usual.
“I’m looking into this system. We are planning on taking it soon.”
“that’s nice”
“u got a high rank there, how come u aren’t in a clan?”
I had to laugh to myself. How come indeed. Well, at least the conversation was different.
Then he said something strange. “u wanna duel?”
What? Bullshit! No way. Somebody actually interested in trying me out, not just thinking I’m good cause I got a crap load of money. Hey, I’d be interested in knowing how I’d go anyway.
“Sure, why not. Be right there.”
I launched out of NB and was greeted by ((UCoS))Marshall11. He set up the duel and we went at it. It was officially my 4th 1 on 1 pvp duel and I did ok for a guns only ship against missiles. I had never used missiles and didn’t know how to stop them but I had learn’t how to avoid them. I managed to skirt by 3 and even hit him a couple of times, got his blue down anyway. He tried some mines but I took those out with cannon fire. Just as I thought I might have had a chance I lost him. Bumma. I swung left when I should have swung right and caught a missile which took me out one hit. Awesome damage. I gotta try those out.
He reckoned it was a good fight and I was happy I managed to last as long as I did. After a few minutes of chat he asked if I would be interested in joining UCoS. He didn’t brag on about system ownership or player numbers but simply stated that the clan was a good one and could benefit from someone like me.
Hey, that was a different approach. I thought about it for a minute, signed up and the rest, as they say, is history.
I wasn’t sure how it would pan out but I started up a ship, with Blacky’s help, and after an hour I was up and running. Blacky had to leave and I figured that would probably be the end of it. A day later I saw Meady and Cruiser on in Dublin so I thought I’d go on down and introduce myself. The reception was great. I was treated like an old member and was made most welcome. I had to duel a bit with Gawdy who was on an UCoS hunting trip and he constantly and consistently knocked the crap out of me but Meady and Cruiser soon saw him off. Damn, imagine being a part of a real team here. How different was this? Over the last 2 weeks I have found that this clan is simply great. It has great leaders, great members with high morale, comradery and patience, let’s face it, anyone who can put up with me has gotta be patient. How bloody different to my first clan experiences can you get?
Btw, if anyone is interested, my first 1 on 1 pvp fight ever was with Assasin Legolas, way back when there was only one of them. It was in NB when LO3 owned it. It consisted of 1 pass – lol.
